Johnson enrolled in the US Army when he was fifteen, although he lied about his age to help support his family.

During a conflict on July 26, 1950, after Johnson successfully pulled two wounded soldiers to safety, when trying to pull out the third soldier, he was fatally wounded at that time, he was only seventeen years old.

His actions were highly recognized, and he was awarded the Purple Heart medal for his courageous actions on August 21, 1950.

After the Korean conflict, the sunset riding club Inc. leased the beach on the eastern end of Perdido Key and wanted to name the area in honor of Johnson’s sacrifice.

After Gulf Islands, National Seashore was built, and the Perdido Key Area, Rosamond Johnson Beach name was reserved for the developed swim Beach.
