This Library was first opened in 1914 as a book station in the home of different community members. 

In 1928, The indigo Woman’s Club leased a building for a county library branch in Indio. Over the past years, the Library was renovated and expanded and grew popular in the community. 

In 1976, the present 33,000 sq feet building was renamed Max T. McCandless Memorial Library in the Indio Civic Center. 

In 2017, the interior of the Library was renovated, which helped in creating more space for reading and studying. 

The Library has over 41,000 items and houses the Office of the Family Literacy Coordinator, a Friend of the Library bookstore, and the East Mobile Resource Van office.
