The army occupied the first Fort from 1816 to 1832 and the second from 1832 to 1856. The Fort Crawford Museum lies in the second Fort Crawford Military Hospital.

In the 1960s, the renovated hospital was converted into the Fort Crawford Museum of Medical Progress, which displays the Fort’s medical history. The museum exhibits emphasize Dr. Beaumont’s experiments and new medical processes. The Wisconsin Medical Society was in charge of the Museum until 1995.

This family-owned apple Orchard covers an area of 40 acres featuring an apple house retail store, a bakery barn, and a country fun park. This 50-years Orchard offers 12 varieties of apples, including Paula red apples, Zester apples, Gala, and early tart McIntosh apples. But the highest-selling apple is the Honeycrisp apple.

Shihata’s Orchard offers U-pick apples, although most customers purchase already picked apples. The owners, David and Linda Shihata, affirmed that almost 10,000 bushels of apples are harvested annually. The Orchard also has a 7-acre Pumpkin patch which provides pumpkins and gourds to customers from mid-September till Halloween.

Shihata Orchard produces and sells its own pasteurized apple cider and also offers cheese, honey, wines, jams, pickled items, and jellies. Shasta Orchard is open every day from Mid-August till October. This Orchard is an excellent place for the family, especially if you want to partake in apple picking.

This company was established in 1852. Potosi Brewing Company was known for brewing outstanding craft beers for over 100 years before closing in 1972 due to shifting market pressures. Thirty-six years later, The Potosi Brewing Company began operating again, serving the region its excellent craft beers.

Currently, the Potosi Brewing Company features the National Brewery Museum, beer garden, brewpub, restaurant, National Brewery Museum, Transportation Museum, and Great River Interpretive Center. Another historical enterprise in Prairie du Chien is Pete’s Hamburger Stand. In 1908 Pete Gokey started the Hamburger Stand by selling his burgers in street fairs, auctions, and carnivals. He used a unique technique of cooking onions and burgers in water at low heat, which hastened his production.

In the 1940s, Pete’s Hamburger Stand transferred into a trailer and later on found a brick and mortar structure where it stands now. Pete Gokey died in 1972 after running the business for 63 years. His son Robert Gokey took over and managed the business for three years, after which he died.
