Oakfield Railroad Prairie

Among the things to do in Rosendale is to visit Oakfield Railroad Prairie Nature Reserve.

Oakfield Railroad Prairie is a 10-acre leftover of the vast, deep-soil mesic and wet-mesic prairies found in this area and has been said to be the best leftover prairie in Fond Du Lac. The lengthy, linear strip of grassland is located inside an old railroad.

The majority of mesic prairies have been almost destroyed in the state as a result of agriculture and human settlement. The accidental fires caused by the rails and random cinders from passing locomotives have helped keep the site open and empty of woody species intrusion, thus, assisting in preserving the prairie.

The northern segment is the most noticeable and diverse. Some dominant grasses include Indian grass, big and small blue-stem, cord grass, blue-joint grass, drop-seed, and switchgrass.

Some expected surplus forbs include Canada tick-trefoil, smooth blue aster, purple prairie-clover, heart-leaved golden Alexander, blazing prairie star, and stiff goldenrod.

The rare ones include glaucous white lettuce, Canadian milk vetch, compass plant, bastard toadflax, and bottle gentian.

The DNR owns Oakfield Railroad Prairie, while Fond du Lac County manages it.
