24 Best & Fun Things to Do in Two Harbors (MN)

Two Harbors is a city situated in Lake County, Minnesota, United States. The city’s population was 3,621 in 2021.

Two Harbors city is nestled beside the shores of Lake Superior. A considerable percentage of its existence as a thriving city can be attributed to the exploration of iron ore close to it.

Besides the iron ore discovery, this Minnesota Iron Company would not have been able to acquire 17,000 acres of land to construct railroads.

The company chose two Harbors because it is close to the iron mine and because the knot is made of a cleat base other than clay.

Apart from iron and trains, other famous industries operate in this city. The city currently provides visitors with diverse businesses, cultures, history, and nature.

The famous question is, “why are plenty of lighthouses beside Lake Superior”? James Oliver Curwood, a 20th Century American Novelist, got an answer to that question. It is hard to believe, but this popular attraction began its journey as a mining company. The founders of the mining company were five people who discovered a hard mineral known as corundum used in sandpaper production.

Therefore they constructed a quarry beside the western coast of Lake Superior and moved into selling to the sandpaper industry.

Since the founders had no geologist, they later learned they had no corundum mine, which was already late. So as an alternative to producing corundum, the quarry has a mineral known as anorthosite.

They had to move on with the production of this mineral and researched ways to profit from the quarry. As time went by, the anorthosite was used in producing a Watordry, a new kind of sandpaper, which yielded them lots of money by 1916.
