Dr. Felix W. de Waldon worked on this piece for over nine years. He also asked some soldiers involved in the fight to pose for him before finally creating the entire piece.

The Marine Military Academy received the statue in 1981, which was donated to encourage young cadets. The academy still houses the Iwo Jima Monument to this day.
