3. Chestnut Street Log House

Chestnut Street Log House is a historic house constructed around 1772. It was built on a limestone foundation. The building has a gable roof and a fireplace, is three bays wide, and has a depth of one bay.

In 1737 and 1741, George Steitz received two land warrants and arranged the lands for a village called Steitztown. In 1750 he embarked on selling those lands.

The village’s name subsequently changed to Lebanon. It had 220 residences around 1772.

George Steitz sold lands that were two perches in width and a depth of six, which requested the buyers to build a house within 18 months of buying a lot. The homes built were required to come with a brick or stone chimney. 

Chestnut Street Log House has survived the effects of time. It is the only surviving building remaining in residence till this time.

The rooms in the Chestnut Street Log House reflect the Pennsylvania German architecture, including the fireplace, unique cellar, stübe, kitchen plan, and Kammer plan peculiar to the 18th-century architectural style.

Chestnut Street Log House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

The Tavern got a new name at the time of the Revolutionary War. It was named “George Washington.” As the years passed, the tavern’s name was changed to the “Franklin House.”
