9. Join the locals in celebrating Old Christmas

On your itinerary of what to do in Rodanthe, NC, should be celebrating Old Christmas with the locals.

Nearly every location develops a set of customs that differentiates it from other areas.

Nonetheless, the celebration of Old Christmas on the Hatters Island Village of Rodanthe seems to have taken it further.

It is a tradition dating back to colonial times, but its roots stretch far further back in time than that.

When Great Britain embraced the Gregorian calendar in 1752, the locals of Rodanthe overlooked it because they were stubborn, isolated, and independent.

As a result, a superb custom known as the Rodanthe Old Christmas has lasted for over 260 years.

Over the years, the celebration has gone through some changes. At one particular time, Old Christmas was a time for settling long-standing grudges and resentments.

The celebration, which takes place on January 6th, includes a carol sing-along with fife and drum music to greet Old Buck, the village’s mascot.

Based on folklore, it was also a time for young ladies to see their future husbands for the first time and for communities to resolve their differences, typically with a drunken fight.

Even if it is less boisterous now, the trip into communal spirit is still sensational.

The Rodanthe Community Center holds the yearly Rodanthe Old Christmas celebration every year.

11. Take photos with the gorgeous Oregon Inlet Life-Saving Station

The Quonochontaug-style station was the third and final station at Oregon Inlet. Construction was finished in February 1898 at $6,860.70.

The first station, one of the outer bank’s original stations, was constructed in 1874.

In 1888, as a result of the shifting channel, it was superseded by a station 400 feet to the west, which was later ravaged by a storm in 1897.

The 1898 station was vastly modified in 1933-34 and further expanded in 1979. It was deserted in 1988 and eventually superseded by a fresh station in July 1990 on Pamlico Sound.

Oregon Inlet Life-Saving Station was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

Since the Oregon Inlet Life-Saving Station is on Pea Island, some people mistake it for the historic Pea Island Life-saving Station.

It is not the popular Pea Island Life-saving Station commanded by Richard Etheridge.

The Pea Island Life-saving Station was situated farther on the island. The remains from the stone foundation of that station are close to the present Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge parking area.
