Tree that Owns Itself

In 1935, a local garden club president requested that the mayor protect one of the trees in the city. It is a 200-year-old, 65-foot-tall oak located close to the city’s heart.

The mayor decided that since the tree was a present from God, it could hold itself, along with trunks, roots, and branches, and thus “own itself.”

The community set up a wrought iron fence around it and placed a plaque informing guests of the tree’s accomplishments.

Then, in 1961, a storm felled the oak tree, and the citizens were distressed to see that their natural landmark was not nonexistent.

Luckily, a local business intervened and planted a new oak tree. The new tree now has the same ownership rights as the previous one.

You can find the Tree that Owns Itself on the corner of Highland Avenue and Cotton Avenue. It is free to visit and open throughout the day.
